My Introduction to Technical Communication

Although I didn't appreciate it at the time, my first lessons on crafting good technical explanations came from my Dad, who also happened to be my high school Chemistry and Physics teacher.

When he wasn't blowing up, zapping or igniting something in the lab, he enjoyed working on his lectures. Nothing made him happier than figuring out a more vivid metaphor, a clearer definition, a simpler set of instructions—anything to get his reluctant students learning (and excited about) science.

Credentials as a Writer

Karleen Stevens McAllester Photo PortraitAfter high school, I pursued a range of interests, including art and education, the areas in which I majored as an undergraduate. But eventually I realized that my strongest skills were as a researcher and writer.

I earned a master's degree in journalism from Boston University, and started my first professional job as a writer at a startup, Avid Technology, where I documented video and film systems. Since then, I've worked as a freelancer, primarily for startups, or on startup projects for Fortune 500 companies, nonprofit, healthcare and educational organizations.

Professional memberships include the Independent Writers of Chicago and the Society for Technical Communication.

Personal Interests

In my spare time, I'm most likely to be found researching (yet another!) new topic on the Internet. One of my favorite vacation spots is on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where miles of open shoreline make it easy to enjoy all sorts of water sports.
